Detailed job description and main responsibilities - Competent in the cultivation of land for growing flowers, plants, trees, hedgerows, and grass etc; diagnosis of gardening/horticultural problems and the affects of the seasons. Recognising the weeds and being competent in their treatment.
- Competent in the hands on operation and undertaking of basic maintenance of gardening and road/path cleaning machinery within the limits of their training, including but not limited to:-
- Pedestrian operated mowers
- All types of hedge cutters
- All types of shears and trimmers
- Salting and gritting machinery
- Vacuum, path clearing machinery
- Sweeping and removal of litter.
- Assist Waste Manager when necessary.
- Undertake training on compactor.
- The working requirements will involve the need to take part in a rostered out of hours call out system during the winter for snow and ice clearing
- Interpret and work from instruction (Head Gardener), and specifications without constant supervision.
- Carry out gardening duties, new plantings/general grounds works to a high level of skill.
- Attend training courses as required.
- Be adaptable to the introduction of new technology
- Observe all statutory and legal requirements in all work particularly in the use of machinery, with regards to the Health & Safety at Work Act.
- Leave work areas clean, tidy, and safe at all times.
- Demonstrate a clear and ongoing commitment to flexibility.
- Develop good working relationships with clinical and non-clinical staff at all levels.
- Provide instruction and guidance for fellow Gardeners and estates personnel on all aspects of grounds and equipment in order to develop their skills and knowledge.
- Be adaptable to the introduction of new technology and working techniques
- Use of IT systems to report incidents using the DATIX system and other management reporting systems
- Any other appropriate duties as requested by management
- Provide a timely reactive service.
- Willing to undertake training as appropriate to the post.
Person specificationQualifications Essential criteria - GCSE pass in Maths and English
Experience Essential criteria - Minimum of 2 years working experience within garden environment
Skills Essential criteria - The ability to communicate, with internal and external customers at all levels
- Able to work as part of a team.
Desirable criteria - Ability to prioritise workload
Knowledge Essential criteria - Must have clear and imaginative ideas and how to improve customer satisfaction and raise profile of the department.
Other Desirable criteria - Ability to give examples and be able to work well under pressure.
- Ability to undertake multi-skilling and provide cover for fellow Team members
